You are what you eat! While we all love a good dessert or a delicious treat (which we highly recommend!), it’s critical to your skin care that you get enough of the right things in your diet too. Today we’re talking about the benefits of eating pumpkin.
While you may only know pumpkins as a fall tradition, the truth is that this fruit (yes, it is a fruit for all of you who are wondering) is packed with nutrients that will help your skin glow. Pumpkin is a great source of most B Vitamins including niacin, which helps treat acne and improve circulation and folate, which also increases circulation and increases cell turnover and renewal. Think of vitamin B as your dietary EXFOLIATE getting rid of the old, dying cells to make room for the new ones. Pumpkin also contains a handful of minerals, which are all critical to the health of your hair and skin. The most notable of these are potassium, copper, and zinc. While potassium helps promote healthy hair and skin regeneration, zinc and copper are key to protecting your skin. Zinc specifically is known to help protect cell membranes, maintain collagen, fight acne, and promote skin renewal – all helping to keep your skin from showing signs of age. Zinc is basically your body’s EXTEND, but it won’t necessarily give you buildable color so try to use them together.
Pumpkin is full of protective antioxidants like alpha-carotene, beta-carotene and other carotenoids which are also the reason that pumpkins are bright orange in color. Eating foods which are a high source of carotenoids can be a good way to help reverse UV damage and improve skin texture. Finally, pumpkin is also a great source of vitamin C, which helps promote collagen production and protects skin from free radical damage like wrinkles and even skin cancer. Collagen is largely responsible for giving your skin elasticity and tone to help you look younger and healthier.
